I !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! a (little) big turbo in my Mazdaspeed3. I’m having it e-tuned by a well respected member of the Mazdaspeedforums, Justin from Freektune. There are a few great tuners out there, but after dealing with him before and having great experiences I decided to go back.

This is the first visualization of data I have from the base map I was sent, which is just made to get the car going safely. I was told it’s set to wastegate spring pressure, usually around 18psi. Currently, the boost control solenoid (if I understand correctly) isn’t doing anything, so the wastegate is doing all the work here.

You can see a couple of things here. First, the stock k04 (blue line) dies at about 4900 RPM. Flat hp from then to redline. The 18g keeps pulling up to redline. I wasn’t used to that feeling at all, it was definitely a strange feeling even at the low boost base map. The 18g also takes forever to spool up. I’m guessing that it will be quicker with the new boost control solenoid doing it’s job, but it still will be slower than the little k04 regardless.

I feel pretty confident about where this is going considering that I’m already above the power the k04 made when the tune was fully fleshed out.

The program I used to get the data in the picture is called VirtualDyno. I’m using it just to get some sort of an idea of what’s going on with the power. It generates the graphs of hp/tq based on the logs I load into it from the Cobb Accessport, but it has support for a lot of other data logging devices. I’ll keep updating you guys on how it goes and where I’m at power wise as I get new maps from the tuner.

Neat! I just started a build on my engine (4G63T) that will be getting a bigger turbo after a bit. Bigger turbos for all the things!

Not to be a Debbie downer, but it seems like you lost some low end power. Peak has decent gains but most fast street cars have nice mid range power. Maybe with a retune it might help out a bit? Maybe an increased redline to make up for lost midrange? Maybe I’m reading this wrong. Need more sleep.

Oh yeah I for sure lost power down low. This log was from the base map the tuner sent me. It was just for safe driving after I got everything installed, and to send him some data logs, one of which was the 3rd gear wot pull that you see in the graph. I’ll gain another 60whp or so by the time tuning is done.

I religiously watch the jafromobile videos on youtube to try to learn as much as I can about that motor. I really want to build one some day. Have fun with yours!

His videos are awesome! I was hoping to try some of the tricks he’s gone over while I had my engine apart, but I don’t have the tools on hand. I got a tuning program as part of a package deal for an ecu I needed, so I’m learning to build an engine and I’ll learn to tune it once I put the small 16g turbo on. It’ll be an adventure that’s for sure, you can check out some my initial work here if you’re interested!

Yep! I’ve got a small EvoIII 16G that will go on eventually. I’ve also got Werewolf that I’ll be using to tune with once I get the engine broken in and what not. Eventually I want to run speed density and some thing like 300 fwhp.

ah ok. yea mine is a stock 1g 6 bolt with arp headstuds and head gasket. I have a stand alone AEM running speed density. Made 300 AWDHP and 330 TQ on 28 psi

I really do wish I had known more about these cars when I bought mine. I would have held out for an AWD model. Oh well, live and learn! You can follow my (pretty slow) progress here if you’d like.

I’m not financially situated to have my engine built, and I bought the car with a misfire because I didn’t know what the heck I was doing. I figured I might as well do it all from top to bottom and really own the thing. Here’s hoping I get it done before the snow flies this year!
